MacBook skin install with no bubbles

A MacBook lid is the easiest surface we cut for: flat, hard, and all one piece. Done in the order below it takes about five minutes and comes out looking painted on. Done out of order it bubbles. Here is the order.

Before you peel anything

Work at room temperature with the lid closed and the MacBook off. Wipe the lid with a microfiber cloth and a little isopropyl alcohol, then let it dry fully; dust and finger oil are what cause most bubbles, not the vinyl. Wash your hands. Lay the skin face up next to the laptop and check it against the lid without peeling, so you know which edge is the hinge.

The five steps

Go slowly on step three and everything else takes care of itself.

  1. Peel the skin off its backing about a third of the way, from the hinge edge.
  2. Line that edge up with the hinge edge of the lid, square to both corners, and press just the first inch down.
  3. Lay the rest down in one pass: peel the backing away with one hand while the other smooths the vinyl from the center out to the sides with a soft cloth. Don't press the whole sheet down at once.
  4. Work out any air with a card wrapped in the cloth, from the center toward the nearest edge. A bubble that won't move: lift the nearest edge, let the air out, lay it back down.
  5. Finish the edges and corners with a hair dryer on low for a few seconds, then press them once more after the vinyl cools. That's it.

About those tiny bubbles

Pinhead-size bubbles that remain after you smooth the skin are air under the adhesive, and they almost always disappear on their own within a day or two as the adhesive settles. A stubborn one can be pricked with a pin and pressed flat. Big bubbles mean the sheet went down in more than one pass; lift that section and lay it again.

If your kit includes palm-rest pieces, do them after the lid, and the trackpad piece last, with the same clean-align-smooth order. Our MacBook skins are cut for the MacBook Air 13″ and 15″ and the MacBook Pro 14″ and 16″, M2 through M5; pick your model on the MacBook skins page. MacBook skins are $34.95; add any second skin, like a matching AirPods skin, and U.S. shipping is free over $35.

Questions people ask

Will a skin block the vents or make the MacBook run hot?
No. The lid skin sits on the outside of the display and never touches the vents, which are at the hinge and underneath. The MacBook runs exactly as it did.
Will it damage the finish or leave residue when I take it off?
No. The vinyl peels off clean whenever you want a new look; the aluminum underneath is the same as the day you covered it.
Can I use a hard-shell case over the skin?
Yes. Apply the skin first and give it an hour to settle, then fit the shell. A clear shell shows the design; an opaque one hides it, so most people pick one or the other.
What if I get it on crooked?
Lift it within the first few minutes and lay it again. The adhesive is forgiving at first and firms up over the next day.
Which MacBooks do you cut for?
The MacBook Air 13″ and 15″ and the MacBook Pro 14″ and 16″, M2 through M5, plus older models listed on the MacBook page. Pick the exact model when you order.
